Chapter Fourteen- Attachment
I hobbled along to the library, silent as I reflected on how my parents might react. I wasnât sure how they would be able to confirm that I even had a Phantom Wolfâs eye. I dreaded having the discussion. It occurred to me once again that they might even have predicted this.
Trim opened the door for me and gently helped me inside. My parents looked grave when they saw my weakened state. âOh Sia!â my mother wailed as she ran over to me. âI am so sorry.â She hugged me tightly, her light-brown ears pinned back as she cried into my neck. I hovered my hand over her back, surprised by her sudden outburst.
âI will stay outside on watch in case someone approaches,â Trim said politely as he edged out of the room. âYou have much to say.â He closed the door behind me and we stood in momentary silence.
My father took my arm to support me over to the couch before carefully settling me against the cushions. âWhat is wrong with your eye?â he asked worriedly. It was the most noticeable of my injuries; of course it would be the first question he would ask.
âI... I donât know,â I honestly said, as I slowly began to unwrap it. âI think it may be better if you saw it for yourselves.â I unwrapped the bandage as my parents looked on in suspense. They gasped as I removed the padding from my green eye.
My motherâs hand flew to her mouth, prompting my father to place a reassuring hand on her shoulder while he carefully looked into my eye. In my right eye everything was much brighter. My eyesight was much keener; it even seemed at times that the floating dust particles irritated me as they fell in front of my eye.
âWhat is wrong with me?â I asked quietly while I patiently waited for them to regain their composure. âAm I going to die?â
âNo. No, you will not,â my mother stated with determination. âSaith?â She looked up at him questioningly, desperate for him to confirm her words.
I thought of Trim and his behavior throughout my ordeal. Is this what Trim thought them to know? It appeared they thought of him at the same time as I did.
âHave you shown Trim this?â my father asked me, looking back at the door. I knew Trim would be within hearing distance of this conversation and it unnerved me that it was the first question my father would ask. I could only nod in answer.
âHe has suspicions it might be a Phantom Wolfâs eye,â I exhaled. I desperately wanted them to refute his suspicions. âBut... that is not possible, that cannot be?â I had intended my denial to come out as a statement, rather than a question, but I needed them to soothe me. To become a Phantom Wolf you must first be killed by a human. And when you awaken from your death you are cursed as a Phantom Wolf. You slaughter your pack.
